Germany Introduces New THC Limits for Drivers and Tightens Cannabis Consumption Rules

New regulations have been introduced in Germany for drivers regarding cannabis consumption. A permitted THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) level in drivers' blood has now been set at 3.5 nanograms per milliliter. If a driver exceeds this limit, they face a fine of 500 euros and a one-month driving license suspension. This limit is comparable to a blood alcohol level of 0.2 grams per liter and is designed to improve road safety.

For new drivers and those under 21, the regulations are even stricter. During the first two years after obtaining a license, they are completely prohibited from consuming cannabis while driving. If they violate this rule, they will be fined 250 euros, even if the THC level does not exceed the established limit.

Special attention is given to cases where cannabis is consumed alongside alcohol. In such situations, fines increase to 1,000 euros, and a one-month license suspension is also applied. The only exception to these regulations is for those who consume cannabis for medical reasons, provided they present the necessary documentation.

These new measures, implemented within the framework of partial cannabis legalization, have generated diverse opinions among experts. Some support the introduction of the limit, considering it necessary to ensure road safety. However, critics believe the previous threshold of 1 nanogram was more appropriate. On the other hand, the ADAC automotive club notes that, so far, the new regulations have not impacted road safety.
